Introduction to signage Metal Works

 Hazard Identification & Action

A hazard can be described as anything that could cause you and others any form of harm.

A hazard that can cause you serious harm is described as significant.

Once a significant hazard has been determined the school must take “all practical steps” to eliminate, isolate or minimise the significant hazard.

Safety Signage

Here are some examples : Identify the sign, Describe what it means ,Explain what action you would take

What to look for….
We should look around the tools, Make sure they are safe and Usable, Also look at the sockets. Have a Small wift to make sure there is no Flammmiblic sign. Look at the Plug and Exenstension cord to make sure there is no Cuts, Exposed wires. Also Make sure it is a Dryland area where u are using the tools (Sunny outdoors, Dry Indoors)

What do I do if something is wrong? ( Fault Reporting )

If there was a Hazard, I would Shut off all tools, Contact the Supervisor and Explain the issue, I would also Depending on the scenario, Contact Fire/Emergency services.  I would if i had to Evacuate everyone (Cord gets exposed to water) and also Rainy days Contact supervisor to push back a day or 2.

An RCD, or residual current device, is a life-saving device that is designed to prevent you from getting a fatal electric shock if you touch something live, such as a bare wire. It can also provide some protection against electrical fires.

What is meant by “Double Insulation” Why is it important

Double insulation is a Power tool that has More than one wrap over the Power cord. This can also mean it has multiple Insulations added into the house/Worksite.

Safety checks and safe working practices when using a mains-powered tool

2022 L2 Engineering

  • Inspect tools for any damage prior to each use.
  • Check the handle and body casing of the tool for cracks or other damage.
  • If the tool has auxiliary or double handles, check to see that they are installed securely.
  • Inspect cords for defects: check the power cord for cracking, fraying, and other signs of wear or faults in the cord insulation.
  • Check for damaged switches and ones with faulty trigger locks.
  • Inspect the plug for cracks and for missing, loose or faulty prongs.

Hazards and dangers of extension cords

Why are extension cords a safety hazard? If the extension cord is covered, heat is unable to escape and could result in a fire. Make sure extension cords are visible and if at all possible, not running across highly trafficked areas. They can be a trip hazard for people walking through the area.

Safe Use of extension cords

Position an extension lead carefully to prevent any risk of damage. If the cable has to cross a pathway, cover it with a rubber protector strip. Always check that leads, plugs and sockets are undamaged. Always check the extension lead plug contains the correctly rated fuse for the equipment being used.
Another way is by Using an RCD Extension Cord.

General PPE when using mains-powered tools: Must wear: Eye protection, Appropriate footwear Hearing Protection Protective Clothing like Overalls

List 4 personal safety points when using a mains powered drill

1. Use PPE Equipment. This will reduce the chance of injuries.

2.

3. Dont hold the drill where there is a Trip/fall hazard.

4. Make sure the Drill has been stickered as it puts you in danger if it is not tagged

5. Make sure the work is secure

List 5 points for safe use and care of the tool

1. Hold the drill by the Handle, Can Tear the Rubber.

2. Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.

3. Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off.

4. Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or the battery pack from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.

5. Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.

List 2 servicing points

1. Make sure the Tool has been survived by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts.

2. Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accesories

List as many specific safety rules regarding using the drill

1. Drill straight

2. Dont drill in the dark

3. Dont drill on an Unsterdy floor

4. Dont drill while on a ladder

5. Dont drill any power electrics

6. Dont drill with exposed wires

7. Dont Drill when Under the influence (alcohol and drug wise)

What PPE is required with this drill:
Safety glasses or face shields should be worn at all times. Ordinary eye or sunglasses are not protection. If you need to raise your voice to be heard over the machine, wear hearing protection. Dust masks should be worn when cutting masonry or manufactured timbers.

Pneumatic tools/air compressors

1. What are Pneumatic tools/air compressors? Pneumatic tools are tools that are powered by Compressed air, This basically means that the tools need Air compressor hooked up to them to work. Air compressors are Big bulky metal boxes with a Motor and a Piston that compresses air. Here are 2 examples.

2. Safety when using an air compressor. Dangers and hazards, preventive action and servicing. When using an Air compressor there are Many dangers and hazards. electrical dangers, fumes, flying particles, high pressures and high noise levels.
There is also the hazard of the Air compressor exploding.
To prevent most of these where the General PPE, Turn off the air compressor. and when you are going to change Bleed the air out of the hose then Detach the tool.

3. PPE when using air tools - general

Basic PPE When Using these tools are Wearing Safty Goggles, Wear Overalls, Wear Ear Muffs and also
wear Closed Toed Shoes.

4. Different types of air tool connections /tools

Hydrolic/Pnumolic Bar press

Hydrolic impact driver

Air Pressure gun

5. Specific safety when using

Impact driver, Dont put the Comprssion too high. or else it wont drill will.

Metal Technologies PPE

 Personal Protective Equipment.

What is PPE?

PPE is Personal Protective Equipment, This can be anything from your uniform to an additional add on

What are the basic requirements for PPE here at the HHS workshop?

The School requirements are as soon as you enter the Metal classroom, wear glasses, Overalls are optional but highly recommended. And when doing something that needs any task specific PPE make sure you wear and not wait for a teacher to say oh you should be wearing this,

What isn’t PPE?
Items that are not PPE are basically Uniforms, caps, or other clothing worn solely to identify

Who pays for your PPE?

The People that pay for your PPE is well, the workplace you are working at, The school if you are doing school work, Yourself if it's a home reno and your boss if its got something to do with a private company.

Explain the different types/range of basic PPE that is available in the workplace.

Basically, everything has a different range of PPE, for example, your earmuffs/Foam earplugs, They range from 1-5E which decides what might save your hearing.

What are examples of task-specific PPE e.g welding?
Some task Specific PPE is a Welding mask/Goggles as they can Block your vision in normal daylight, Helmets, are not required at a school for metal engineering however if u go onto a worksite (Building houses) U must wear a helmet.

Here is a couple of photos of me and a partner in basic PPE:
